Kitten Feeding Guidelines

As your kitten grows, their feeding patterns and nutritional needs change rapidly, especially for the first 12 months of their growth. You can refer to this feeding guide on how to feed a newborn kitten, which can also be found on every WHISKAS® kitten food bag.

Age  Feeding Guideline
0-2 monthsKittens should be fed on milk from their mother. At around 1 month, you can introduce small amounts of kitten wet food as they begin weaning off cat milk.
2-4 monthsFeed your kittens 4-5 pouches of wet kitten food a day, mixing in dry food and adjusting portions accordingly.
4-8 monthsIncrease the amount of wet cat food to 5-6 pouches a day.
8-12 monthsReduce the frequency of feeding while maintaining the amount being fed per day.
1+ years

Transition your cat entirely towards 2 meals per day as their growth begins to slow down. Adjust diets accordingly (you can refer to our cat diet guide(open in new tab) for more information).

For more detailed information on kitten feeding, you can refer to our kitten feeding guide(open in new tab).

How to Transition to New Kitten Food

  • Begin with a gradual mix: 25% new food, 75% current food over the first few days to avoid digestive upset.
  • Watch for signs of intolerance: loose stool, vomiting, or refusal to eat.
  • Always have fresh water available when feeding dry foods.

These are the steps to introduce a new type of kitten food. However, if you are interested in kitten weaning off cat milk, you can find out more from our kitten weaning guide here(open in new tab)

Important Nutrients in Kitten Food

Many first-time kitten parents may not know this, but the tiny furball requires a plethora of nutrients for proper growth and development. While kitties are naturally energetic, their food must contain the necessary nutrition to boost their stamina and immune system. Here is a list of the most essential nutrients for your little tiger!

  1. High levels of essential animal-based proteins enriched with DHA for brain and eye development.
  2. Balanced Minerals & Vitamins: Calcium and phosphorus for bone health; vitamin E, zinc, and biotin for healthy skin and coat; colostrum for gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal support.
  3. Essential antioxidants for a strong and active immune system.
  4. Healthy Fats (Omega-3 & Omega-6) to promote healthy skin, shiny coats, joint health, and cognitive function.
  5. Hydration support to help supply up to 80% of a cat’s daily water needs, an important factor in urinary and kidney health.

Whether you opt for wet cat food or dry cat food, WHISKAS® kitten food is your best option as it contains all these essential nutrients to help your kitty grow up healthy and strong.
